{NEWS} SM Entertainment rap instructor JQ reveals Minho’s personality + interview
While JQ is not a name most fans hear of in the world of K-pop, he plays an important role in the lives of SM Entertainment artists. JQ is better known as the “idol rap instructor” and works with SM artists to improve and direct their rapping abilities.
Now, he has broadened his horizons beyond a rap instructor, as he works as an artists himself as well as a producer. In his interview with Newsen, he reveals his thoughts on the more difficult times he experienced and his entry into SM.
At first, he stated, it was difficult. All JQ was interested in was making music, but he did not have the money to support himself and had no choice but to work in a factory, where he earned 500,000 KRW a month (about $446 USD). He revealed that he would save 300,000 KRW out of his earnings for his music and eventually was discovered for his take on rapping through a video he created out of the movie ‘His Voice‘.
He stated, “A UCC video star is not a singer. But at the same time, a UCC star is not a complete amateur either. For every event I worked, I would receive 50,000~70,000 KRW (about $45~$63 USD). I would still live off my factory salary. When I thought about my younger brother, who is employed in a company, I would think to myself, ‘When will I start to live normally too?’ I was envious of anyone who had a normal, regular lifestyle.”
JQ continued, “That’s when I received an offer to make the rap segment for SHINee’s ‘Love Should Go On‘. It felt like grabbing on to a piece of straw. I was in a position where I really needed the job.”
Feeling the pressure of the job, he worked for 3 days straight on the rap without sleep, saving as much money he could along the way to support himself, as the job would provide the amount of money he would normally earn in a month. As a result of his hard work, his rap segment was selected to be a part of the song.
He stated that he was honored, as he continued, “I was deeply moved. When I was on my way to SM, I kept thinking to myself, ‘How can I… How can I…’ This was before SHINee debuted, and so I’m sure they were anxious. So was I. I was as anxious as if it were my own first album. I taught them, sweating nervously the entire time. I didn’t believe I had the qualifications to teach SHINee how to rap, so I worked even harder. I taught them everything I learned from rapper MC Sniper. I felt bad about it later and apologized to him. He told me it was okay.”
JQ’s first ties to SM started with SHINee. Naturally, as one of SHINee’s rappers, Minho became one of JQ’s closest co-workers and friends at SM. JQ stated that they continue to keep in contact lately. When asked if Minho was cool and cold like his unreal looks, JQ revealed what Minho’s personality is like.
“Minho has not changed since I first met him. He’s like a younger brother to me. He doesn’t act like he’s a celebrity. He’s a very simple person. Right now, he’s in the middle of filming SBS‘s ‘To The Beautiful You‘. He looks amazing. Through SNS, I said to him, ‘Hey you look awesome on TV right now’ to which he responded, ‘Hyung, you’re watching too? As expected’. I think a lot of people really like Minho, like I do. He’s a dongseng I can easily call over to the recording studio and have a bowl of jajangmyun (black bean noodles) with.”
JQ complimented Minho heavily, also revealing that he taught Minho everything he knows about rapping. Through Minho, JQ explained that he had an easier time getting close to the members of TVXQ.
“Minho is great at writing rap segments. He has a lot of bright ideas and a few genius moments here and there. I was really amazed by the rap he wrote for ‘Juliette‘. He works really hard, and he doesn’t give up on anything when he does his work. Key is also an excellent rapper. He catches on after only hearing a rap segment a few times. All of the members are so talented.”
As a fan of original idols H.O.T and Seo Tae Ji, JQ went from someone who listened to their songs to the rap instructor of their junior groups. He is a great example of a self-made person who followed his dreams and worked through his hardships to achieve his goals.

{NEWS} SHINee, B2ST, T-ara, f(x), Ailee, and more to perform at Korea’s demilitarized zone
MBC announced at a press conference on July 26th that they will be
holding a ‘Peace Concert’ this August at Korea’s demilitarized zone
(DMZ), the buffer area between North and South Korea.
The concert will be held specifically on August 14th-15th in the outdoor theatre at Paju’s Imjingak Park. It will be celebrating the 59 years of ceasefire between North and South Korea, and convey a message of peace through music.
For this concert, MBC’s main points of focus was to appeal to a mass audience. The head of MBC’s Special Event Planning Team told the press, “In order to better approach a wide range of people in a more familiar manner, we have prepared this concert while keeping mainstream appeal in mind.”
The first day of the concert will consist of performances by top K-Pop stars, while the second day is scheduled to showcase familiar classical performances. The first day of the concert will be subtitled, ‘We are a peaceful generation’, and will open with the stars Han Young Ae, Bobby Kim, SHINee, T-ara, B2ST, f(x), SISTAR, A Pink, and Ailee. Popular classics such as the “Shostakovich Waltz”, “Libertango”, “Imagine” by John Lennon, and traditional Korean folk song “Arirang” will also be performed.
The concert will be free of charge, and will not have a limited audience number, as it will take place in the wide outdoors.
The concert will be filmed so that the performances can be viewed via TV as well. The head of MBC Hong Suk Ho commented, “Although we haven’t decided on the exact time frame, we will broadcast the concert on television a few hours after the performance comes to an end.”

{REVIEW}A Boyz Nite Out Party In Singapore!
15 June 2012, a one-night only music extravaganza bringing not 1 but 5
of the hottest Korean acts on one stage. Launch Entertainment once
again impresses with ‘Boyz Nite Out’. An impressive lineup of idol groups SHINee, B1A4, Teen Top, 7.9.4.2 and the multi-talented soloist Jay Park blew the audience away at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
A strong 3000 over fans turned up and filled the stadium, some rushing for their seats as the concert started puntcually at 7pm. The energy was high as Teen Top opened the night with ‘To You‘ followed by their hit songs ‘Girlfriend’, ‘No More Perfume on You’ and ‘Crazy’.
“Since we are in Singapore which is such a beautiful city, of course we prepared more than just these 2 songs”. And so the men of 7.9.4.2 broke into a medley of Korean songs, which includes ‘Paradise’, the theme song of popular k-drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’.
Multi-talented soloist(singer, rapper, song-writer, bboy, and what have you!) Jay Park brought the show to a peak with his smooth choreography and X-factor. He performed a total of 8 songs. However, a special 3 songs sets this performance apart from his New Breed promotional showcase. He seduced the crowd with ‘Turn Off Your Phone’ thereafter surprising everyone by singing 2 of his mixtape tracks, ‘Do What We Do’ and ‘Body2Body’.
By all means, the hottest act of the night, Jay took
off his white singlet and showed off his well-defined tanned torso
during his last song. We hear he had been to the gym twice before the
concert to prepare the eye-feast specially for fans!
With everyone already up on their feet and screaming for more, the final anticipated act SHINee
appeared with a bang! Pearlescent blue lights, the official fancolor,
accompanied SHINee’s performance. They brought Shawols(fans) down the
memory lane with debut song ‘Replay’ and hits like ‘Ring Ding Dong‘ and ‘Lucifer‘.
The boys explained the reason behind member Minho‘s absence, that was due to a clash in filming schedule. With a promise to be back as 5 again, the remaining four filled up the gap and impressively took over Minho’s parts. The night ended with the synchronized performance of their comeback track ‘Sherlock‘.
Korea.com would like to thank Launch Entertainment for the kind invitation to this music extravaganza, Boyz Nite Out! Follow Launch on facebook as well as twitter for upcoming events. (Hint: Something BIG is coming up!)

Up next flying high with their youth and cheeky boyish charm was B1A4 with ‘Beautiful Target’. A birthday celebration was held for member CNU
who turned 22. The birthday boy appeared overwhelmed with emotions as
fans sang the birthday song in korean. He was then presented with a
birthday cake and a fan-made scrapbook. His birthday wish for the night
was that “B1A4 and BANAs to stay together forever.”
Rookie ballad group 7.9.4.2 got the fans swaying and
waving along to their strong smooth vocals. Off their debut album and
the ost for their Indonesia-collaborated drama, they sang ’I'll Be Famous’ and ‘More Than I See You’. They got close to fans in the standing pit, and consistently waved and showed their warmth.“Since we are in Singapore which is such a beautiful city, of course we prepared more than just these 2 songs”.
